J. L. Lovejoy was born in Washington D.C., son of George Naylor Lovejoy and Rebecca Smallwood. He married Phoebe Aarons April 22, 1825 in Claiborne County, Mississippi. Old Dalton Cemetery is now part of Roselawn Memorial Park in Denton, Texas.

The family of the Rev. John L Lovejoy was one of the earliest of Collin county's
pioneers. John L was born in 1800 in Georgia and brought his family to Texas in
1835, crossing Red River at Mill Creek and lived both in Lamar County and
Grayson. In 1845 he settled at Buckner and opened a general merchandise store.
Old records note that on the day they moved into Buckner he sent his son, James
H. to the log cabin of William Davis to borrow fire.
His children were George, John L, James H, and Una. His store was a gathering
place for the sparsely settle community and he did a good business selling to
the settlers and trading with the peaceful Indians who lived here at the time.
Lovejoy decided to follow the county seat when it was moved and on May 1, 1848,
his little store was hauled across three miles of prairie by 16 oxen driving by
Manse Wilmeth. It was placed on the northwest corner of the present square on
May 3, 1848, the first store in McKinney. The family live in the back room of
the store and it later became the Foote House. He later sold the location to
the Alexander brothers and moved to Denton where he also put in the first
business.
