Wayne Thomas Gregory, Sr. (USMC Maj. Ret.), 89, of Springfield, MO, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2018. He was born in Springfield on Oct. 22, 1928, the son of Lloyd and Ruby (Boles) Gregory. He and his wife, Edith Hope (Sederberg) Gregory were married 68-1/2 years ago in San Gabriel, California.
Wayne graduated from Springfield High School, Class of 1946. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Oct. 22, 1945. He served in China, (Tsingtao 1947-49), served aboard the U.S.S. Princeton for 2 years, and had two tours in Korea and Japan. His last duty station was in Subic Bay, Philippine Islands serving as the Supply Officer for the 1st Marine Air Wing in Vietnam. He retired from the Corps on June 30, 1967.
After Subic Bay, Wayne and his family moved to Springfield, MO. He worked at Zenith for nine years while attending night classes at Missouri State, graduating in 1976 with a B.S. in Social Studies Education. He did substitute teaching at Willard and Central High Schools before his second career in Child Support Enforcement for the State of Missouri (1976 - 1989). Wayne and Edith traveled abroad and visited all 50 states. They took a cruise through the Panama Canal to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary.
Wayne was a dedicated Christian and a Methodist all his life. He was a member at Renew United Methodist Church, Willard, MO for 44 years. Wayne was active with the U.M Men's group, making apple butter with them every fall as a fundraiser for the annual Fall Festival, and sang in the Choir many years. Wayne was also a member of the Masonic lodge United No 5 AF FM, the American Legion, and the Retired Aviation Supply and Logistics Marines. Wayne's four children blessed him with 11 grandchildren. He specialized in fixing broken toys for his grandchildren and children. Wayne gave 25 gallons of whole blood to save the lives of others and brought meals to homebound residents of Willard, MO for 13 years.
Wayne is survived by his wife, Edith, his two sons Tom ( wife Kathy) and Rick (wife Carolyn); his daughters Colleen (Gregory) Andrews (husband Larry) and Becky (Gregory) Hurd, (husband Virgil,); and his grandchildren: Courtney (Gregory) Ragan, (Ryan) and Deanna (Gregory) Bekkedahl) (Zack); Caroline (Andrews) Strait (Jon-Paul); Emily (Andrews) Evans (Steve); Jonathan Andrews (Kelly) and Tim Andrews (Dani); Ben Poirot (Courtney); Nina (Poirot) Hurst (Aaron), Marie Poirot; and Hope and Maya Gregory; and ten great-grandchildren, with an 11th due in April. He is also mourned by his step-sister Pat (Reid) Ellison and husband Al and sister-in-law Bobbie Gott.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mothers Leora (Funkhouser) Gregory and Della (Reid) Gregory, brothers Richard and Lloyd Jr. sister Frances (Gregory) Corbett and husband Harlin, step-sister Juanita (Gott) Birkes and husband Chuck, step-brother Bud Gott, nephew, L. B Corbett and niece, Harlina (Corbett) Price.
Interment at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.
