Sue Williams Compton Lane passed away March 24, 2018 at home surrounded by her children.

Sue was a gifted artist in her community. After being widowed at a young age, raising her 3 children, and remarrying, she entered college and graduated with honors from the University of Tennessee. She went on to teach art for 18 years before retiring. Sue loved people and was an active community volunteer for many local organizations. After being widowed for the second time, she became active with Gates to Hope. She was a founding, and charter board member of the Fountain City Art Center and could be found volunteering there weekly. She painted and took art classes throughout her life. As an active member of Cedar Lane United Methodist Church (formally Inskip United Methodist Church) she was on many committees and served the community through their outreach efforts such as the Kids Closet, hospitality committee and the food pantry. A quiet philanthropist, Sue supported many causes in the community. She loved travel and considered herself lucky to have traveled throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. She never met a stranger and was loved by all who met her and was known as “Mama” Sue to her children’s friends.

She is preceded in death by her beloved parents, C.H. (Hurst) and Opal Osborn Williams, brother George R. Williams and loved husbands Fred O. Compton and Howard P. Lane.

She is survived by the children who loved her dearly, David R. Compton, Cheri G. Compton, Cathy Compton Benedict and husband, Jeff Benedict. Sue adopted many people along the way, but none more special to her than Dottie and RedPaint Spilman. She is also survived by siblings Bob (Carolyn) Williams, C.H. (Louise) Williams, Doug (Pat) Williams, Beverly (Bill) Ramsey and Joyce Curington; as well as many nieces and nephews and much loved friends.

There will be a graveside service at Sherwood Memorial Gardens on Alcoa Highway on Friday, March 30, 2018 at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cedar Lane United Methodist Church at 714 Cedar Lane, Knoxville, TN 37912, Fountain City Art Center, 213 Hotel Ave., Knoxville, TN 37918 or Bill’s Blankets, 2214 Fenwood Ave, Knoxville, TN 37918.
