South Carolina Statesman. He was the South Carolina Attorney General in 1832 and a member of Congress from 1837 through 1847 and became a United States Senator where he served from 1850 through 1852. Several years before the Civil War he became a big advocate of secession from the United States. When South Carolina joined the Confederacy in 1861 the became a member of the Confederate Provisional Congress.
