Mark Anthony Welsh, Sr., 81, a resident of Corpus Christi for 29 years, died Saturday morning in a San Antonio hospital. Born, reared, and educated in Philadelphia, Pa., he was a graduate of La Salle Extension University and The American Institute of Banking. He lived in Houston, Texas, where he was associated with The San Jacinto Trust Company, before moving to Corpus Christi in 1936, and making his home at 1137 Florida St. He was a Trust Officer of Guaranty National Bank and Trust until his retirement in 1963. Active in civic work, he served two terms as President of the Corpus Christi Real Estate Board; Chairman of the Corpus Christi Bayfront Committee; and Director of The Corpus Christi Real Estate Board and The Texas Real Estate Association. He was regional appraiser for the Federal Public Housing Authority and assistant appraiser for the U.S. Navy and for insurance companies. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, American Legion. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1202, and a charter member of the Corpus Christi Serra Club. He was honored twice by Pope Pius XII, first on Oct. 15, 1949, with the Medal of The Order of Benemerenti, and on April 10, 1954, he was knighted in The Order of St. Sylvester. He served on the Area Development Bartholomew Plan and was Vice-President of the Texas Rural Electrical Association. He was one of the original members of the Board of Trustees of Memorial Medical Center and the Texas Chapter of Farm Brokers Institute.

He served as a member of the Board of Equalization for the School Board, and on the Building Staff of Boys City. For twenty-one years he was manager of the Real Estate Department of Guaranty Title and Trust, before becoming Trust officer. He taught Real Estate Management at Del Mar College and served as an appraiser for the Lower Nueces River Water Supply District. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War I.

His remains will be taken to the Corpus Christi Cathedral Thursday. A Rosary will be recited that evening. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at the Corpus Christi Cathedral with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. William T. Thompson as celebrant. Burial will be in Seaside Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Elisa Eckard Welsh of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Mrs. Robert W. (Gloria) Wrase, Jr. of Abquaiq, Saudi Arabia; a son Col. Mark A. Welsh, Jr. of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa; one sister, Miss Ann Welsh of Camden, N.J.; one brother, Edward J. Welsh of Camden, N.J.; five granddaughters and two grandsons. Maxwell P.
