Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He Sergeant in Company K, 9th US Calvary. On August 12, 1881, Sergeant Shaw's detachment of nineteen cavalrymen was attacked by hostile Indians at Carrizo Canyon, New Mexico. Though vastly outnumbered, he led the troops in forcing the enemy back and holding their ground in an extremely exposed position. For leadership and extreme bravery in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Medal of Honor.
