19th Prime Minister of Denmark. Hilmar Tormod Ingolf Baunsgaard served as Denmark’s Prime Minister from February 2, 1968 to October 11, 1971. Prior to becoming prime minister, he enjoyed a successful career in the private sector in the grocery industry. In 1957 he became a member of parliament as a non-socialist candidate, and in 1961 he was made minister of commerce. Being member of the Radically Liberal Party, he is best remembered for supporting the abolition of pornography laws and Danish entry into the European Economic Community (EEC). He was also hailed as the first major Danish politician to utilize television as the main media for communication with the citizenry. During his term, the economy worsened with the social welfare benefits, and the government was forced to increase taxes, thus he was not re-elected. He had replaced the Social Democrat candidate, Jens Otto Krag, in 1969 and Jens Otto Krag replaced him in 1971. He retired from parliament in 1977 to return to the private sector as chairman of the daily newspaper “Politiken.”
