ANNAPOLIS Robert Peter DeStefano of Annapolis died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Somerford Place after a six- year battle with dementia. He was 77.

Mr. DeStefano was born June 29, 1931, in Providence, R.I. In 1953 he graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree. He also won a Sugar Bowl ring for the University of Maryland.

Mr. DeStefano made his home in Anne Arundel County 50 years ago. He developed Park Plaza, Kent Towne Market and Village at Waugh Chapel. He was president, founder and owner of Sturbridge Development Company since 1976.

His interests and hobbies included serving his community as trustee for Anne Arundel Community College and chairman for the Anne Arundel Medical Center, playing a key role in the hospital acquiring the location on Jennifer Road. He was a big supporter of Hospice of the Chesapeake.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Nancy Virginia DeStefano.

Survivors include three sons, William C. DeStefano of Centreville, Robert J. DeStefano of Edgewater and Michael K. DeStefano of Severna Park; two daughters, Lynn Walterhoefer of West River and Gina DeStefano of Crownsville; two brothers, Joseph DeStefano and Mario DeStefano, both of Providence, R.I.; and 13 grandchildren.

Family and friends may visit on Friday, June 12, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road in Edgewater.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 13, at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, 1070 Cecil Ave. S. in Millersville.

Burial will be private.
