William Groom, 60 years old, coal mine operator of 1910 West Main Street, died suddenly of a heart attack in St. Elizabeth's Hospital at 6 o'clock last night. Mr. Groom, who had been under the care of a physician for a heart ailment for some time, was stricken at his home at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon and rushed to the hospital for treatment.

An active member of the First Methodist Church and the church choir and in Masonic affairs,he was vice-president of the Groom Coal Company, operators of a mine on the Freeburg Road, two miles south of Belleville.

Mr. Groom was born in Belleville September 8, 1886, a son of the late John and Mary C. Groom, nee Dickenson. His mother was a native of Missouri, his father a native of Belleville.

Surviving are his wife, the former Maude E. Hall whom he married in Belleville April 4, 1917; two brothers and a sister:

Mrs. Anna Massey, San Francisco, Calif.

Two sisters preceded him in death.

He also was a member of the St. Clair Lodge No. 24, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, and the Chapter and Council of Knight Templar Consistory No. 50.

Funeral at 2 p.m. Monday from the Gundlach and Co. Funeral Home with Rev. F. W. Schwarzlose, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Interment in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
