Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Maine in 1843, he served as a Private in Company F, 8th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. At the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863, when the rebel assault stalled at Emmetsburg Road, Union forces charged forward and Private Richmond captured the Confederate flag. PVT Richmond engaged in the very first Civil War Act Of Valor carried out by a "Colored Troop." For heroism, the Medal Of Honor was awarded posthumously on December 1, 1864.
