Lohr & Barb Funeral Home Obituary:

PAUL LEWIS ESSIE ROY, age 80 years, a resident of Parsons, WV, departed this life Thursday afternoon, April 16, 2009 at Ruby Memorial Hospital at Morgantown following a short illness. He had been in declining health. He was born Monday, June 25, 1928, at home on Tannery Row at Parsons, WV, a son of the late Denver Lee Roy and Viola Pearl Bodkin. He was united in marriage March 28, 1952 to the former Velma Virginia Shahan at Red House, Md, with The Rev. Donald Gallion officiating. They had celebrated fifty seven years of marriage.

Also surviving are one son, Gregory Paul Roy of Parsons; two daughters, Risha Roy McGill and husband Randy of Point Pleasant, Michelle Roy Phillips and husband Allan of Ranson, WV; one brother, Junior Denver Roy and wife Patricia of Morgantown; one sister, Joan Roy Liller of Camas, WA; one half brother, Stelman Roy, three grandchildren, Reanna and Jon Phillips, both of Ranson, WV., and Arysta McGill Brick and husband Jason of Mount Airy, NC; one step grandson, Jeremy McGill and wife Elaine of Sissonville, WV, three step great grandchildren, Kyia, Emma and Eric McGill, all of Sissonville, WV.
Preceding him in death are five brothers, Howard Hank, Eddie, Wallace, Raymond and Donald Clare Roy; two half brothers, Charles and Winfred Roy; and two sisters, Gladys Roy Kisner and Patty Roy Smith.

He attended Parsons High School and received his GED in 1953. He was known for his exceptional athletic abilities and had a special love of the game of basketball and Horseshoes. In 1947, he enlisted in the newly formed United States Air Force. He actively served during the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge in 1953. He reenlisted in the Air Force in 1956 and wore the uniform with pride as a Staff Sergeant, honorably discharged and retired in April of 1971. He did tours of duty during the Vietnam Conflict as well as other fields, foreign and domestic, receiving numerous medals, badges and citations. Immediately prior his retirement he had the privilege of participating in the work of the Apollo 14 space mission. Even with all the variety, challenges and excitement of his earlier years, he couldn't wait to return to Tucker Co. He called it God's Country, and he and his wife Velma returned to the Parsons area after retirement. He worked at the Parsons Tannery Company until its closing. He also worked at the Power Plant at Mt. Storm and did work for the West Virginia Soil Conservation Dept. He was a Protestant by faith and at one time served as Sunday School Superintendant at the Parsons First Church of the Nazarene. Essie loved to sing, was helpful, neighborly and known for his quick wit. He was a most devoted fan of the WVU Mountaineers.

The family will receive friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Monday from 5 to 8 PM. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home parlor on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 1 PM. The Rev. Eli Hostetler will officiate and interment will follow at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion and the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War will conduct full military rites.
