Source: Chillicothe (Ohio) Gazette, May 14, 1943. Harry J. McElroy, Jr. was born in Columbus. A graduate of North High School, he was a sophomore at Ohio State University when he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 26, 1942. Assigned to the 360th Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, at Groton Field, Connecticut, he was killed in the crash of P-47D serial number 42-8241, at about 2 p.m., May 13, 1943, near North Stonington, Connecticut.
