Dale Eugene Theis, age 82, of Mapleton died Monday, March 19, 2018 at Pathstone Living in Mankato.

Funeral Service will be Friday, March 23 at 10 am at St. John's Lutheran Church in Mapleton. Visitation will be Thursday, March 22 4-7 p.m. at Olson-Tichenor Funeral Home in Mapleton and it will resume at church at 9 a.m. Interment will be at Union Cemetery in Mapleton.

Dale was born in Wadena, Minnesota in 1935 to Michael and Irene (Wilson) Theis, the fourth of eight children. His family moved many times and he lived in numerous places throughout Minnesota. He met Sandra “Sandy” Evenson in Minnesota Lake and she fell in love with her blue-eyed charmer. They married in 1955 in Mapleton. They moved to Mapleton in 1956 and have lived there since. Over their 60+ years of marriage, they were blessed with 11 children, 29 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

Dale worked at Continental Can (now Crown Cork and Seal) in Mankato for 43 years, starting in 1954 until he retired as a Machinist in 1997. While employed at Continental Can, he wrote an operational manual for a machine and traveled to New York, Texas, Ohio, Kansas, Chicago and Mexico to instruct other plants on how to use the machinery. After his retirement, he returned to work at Johnson’s Outdoors in Mankato.

Dale was an avid hunter and fisherman, passing along a love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He loved watching westerns, was a huge John Wayne fan and his favorite author was Louis L’Amour. He raised a large garden every year, canning and freezing the produce with his wife. In between the rows of cucumbers, tomatoes and rhubarb, he would plant zinnias and cosmos to have fresh flowers for the many bouquets on Sandy’s dining room table.

Later in life, when outdoor activities became more difficult for him to enjoy, you would usually find him on his computer, watching national news programs or listening to country music on the radio. When he wasn’t discussing politics, he was telling jokes and stories of his family and childhood. Many conversations would often begin with “Let me tell you a story.”

Dale is survived by his wife, Sandy of Mapleton and their children; Alan Theis of Mapleton, Tom (Gloria) Theis of Mankato, Rebecca (Kenton) Giese of Good Thunder, Elizabeth (Kellon) Giese of Good Thunder, Barbara (Jeffrey) Urban of Amboy, Daniel (Brenda) Theis of Elk River, Jennifer Theis of Owatonna, John (Danielle) Theis of Owatonna, James (Maggie) Theis of Lake City, Christopher Theis of Mapleton, Melissa (Jacob) Quilling of Mankato, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Michael (Susie) Theis of Daggett, MI; Betty Flood (Bernard Feldman) of Kenyon, Theresa Skorczewski of Arco, MN and many nieces and nephews. Dale is preceded in death by his parents, siblings Hazel Marte, Gladys “Bonnie” Walters, David Kuhns and an infant sister.
