GREENVILLE - Mrs. Esther Laura Spence Phillips Sherman, 92, passed into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, March 19, 2018, following two years of declining health.

Esther was born on July 4, 1925, to the late Robert Finley and Mary Mahulda Clagett Spence. Educated from kindergarten through college years by Berea College, Esther completed her education in 1947 with a bachelor's degree in music education. She enjoyed teaching music and English. She was an inspiration to many young students.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert F. Spence, Jr.; her sister, Helen Frances Spence Scruggs and her first husband, Clyde Phillips.

She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, the Reverend William W. Sherman, Jr.; sons, Charles F. Phillips (Myra) of Aberdeen and Stephen M. Phillips of Biscoe and the children of her husband, William W. Sherman, III (Cathy) of Greenville, D. Bruce Sherman (Sharon) of Walnut Grove and Deborah S. Fields (Stuart) of Whispering Pines. Her Grandchildren include, Michele Maness Hicks (Justin) of Asheboro, Bryan A. Fields (Lesley) of Charlotte, David B. Sherman, Jr. (Meredith), of Charlotte, Nicholas Phillips of Troy, Patrick T. Fields of Raleigh, Lauren E. Sherman of Greenville, Paige Horne of Aberdeen, George W. Sherman and Jonathan L. Sherman of Greenville. Her great-grandchildren are Zachery K. Cheek and Zander L. Cheek of Asheboro, Liliana P. Sherman of Greenville and Campbell A. Fields of Charlotte. Mrs. Sherman also has two nephews, two great-nephews, and three great-nieces.

Services of Death and Resurrection will be held at Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church on Friday at 11 AM, along with a service at Centenary United Methodist Church in New Bern at 3 PM, followed by her committal in the church columbarium. Visitation in Greenville will be held Thursday evening from 6-8 PM in the Brown Auditorium Cypress Glen, and in New Bern following the committal service in the fellowship hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Cypress Glen Benevolent Care Fund, 100 Hickory St, Greenville, NC 27858; Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church in Greenville, 510 S Washington St, Greenville, NC 27858; Centenary United Methodist Church, 309 New St, New Bern, NC 28560; or to a charity of your choice.

We are grateful for the wonderful staff and residents at Cypress Glen who were always attentive and compassionate, Dr. Quin Cao and the staff in the Palliative Care Unit at Vidant Hospital, and Janet Keel, Jenny Knox, Jessica Summerlin, Jeanne Whichard, Destiny Spruill, and Ruth Hardy whose love and care of Esther during the last two years was wonderful.
