Edward was born in Buffalo and lived most of his life in Tonawanda, New York. He graduated from Technical High School. He attended the University of Buffalo Law School and was the youngest in his class to receive a law degree; in 1927 at age 19. His legal career spanned more than 60 years. He worked for the firm of Hull, Hammond, and Goldstein and later was a partner of then-Assemblyman Julius Volker. He was made an honorary life member of the Erie County Bar Association in 1981. He was chairman of the State Bar Association Continuing Legal Educational Program in the 1970's and chairman of its Trusts and Estates Division. He also played an active role in the controversy over construction of an Erie County domed stadium . He co-wrote the Erie County Charter in 1959 with future State Supreme Court justice Thomas P. Flaherty.
