Dan Moody Johnson, 91, Salida, died Friday, March 16 at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.

He was born February 16, 1927 in Freeport, Texas to Richard Lanham and Millie Ione (Cayton) Johnson.

He grew up in Texas and after graduating from high school in 1944 he joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

He moved to Salida when there was a strike at Union Carbine in Texas where he was working and a friend in Salida suggested he come to Salida to look for a job.

He was hired at Safeway and was bagging groceries there when he met his wife, Mary Veltrie. They were married on May 19, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church and spent 53 years together. She preceded him in death in 2004.

He later worked at The Boys Market in Salida and then returned to Safeway, spending a total of 43 years in the grocery business.

Always active in his community, he spent 53 years with the Chaffee County Translator, Association, was on the board of St. Joseph’s Credit Union (now Mountain River Credit Union) for 40 years and for nine years during the 1960s he was a Forestry 4-H leader. He was a member of Ray Lines Post #64 of the American Legion and was also their historian.

When he learned about the efforts to restore the Chaffee County World War II Honor Roll on the side of the F Street Five & Dime building, he volunteered to raise funds for the project and raised over $25,000 The wall was restored and rededicated on July 4, 2016.

He was honored by Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce in January of 2017 as the 2016 Man of the Year, largely for his work with the World War II Honor Roll wall.

He loved spending time with his family, friends and people in the community and was known as the “town hugger,” always greeting friends and family with a big hug and a smile.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Betty Veltrie, many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews , great-grand nieces and nephews and a special friend, Harriette Yeakley.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with internment to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
