OWASSO Talbert Allen "Humpy" Gooday, 79, Owasso, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 17, 2018, with his children at his side in a Tulsa hospital.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Comanche Nation Funeral Home with Pastor Baxter Asepermy officiating.
Interment will follow at Fort Sill Apache Cemetery, with full miltary honors by the Marine Corps, the Comanche Indian Veterans Association and the Comanche Nation Police Firing Squad.
He married Sue Asepermy Gooday on Sept. 12, 1964, in Apache. She passed away on March 3, 2018, exactly two weeks before his death. They shared the same birthday four years apart (Sue was younger). Their families lived 3Ù miles from each other.
Mr. Gooday was born Sept. 13, 1938, to Robert and Mary Powhoneat Gooday in Lawton. His father was a full-blood Warm Spring Nednai Apache, and his mother was a full-blood Comanche. Talbert grew up west of Apache and attended Boone Grade School. He graduated from Apache High School in 1957.
During his teen-age years he spent his summers with his Apache grandparents: Talbot and Charlotte Sahnne Lo Gooday, on the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation in New Mexico, learning his Apache traditions. He worked on the reservation cow camps and was a "real" cowboy tending the tribe's livestock and breaking wild mustangs.
Talbert attended Haskell Junior College and was a member of the baseball team. He then moved to Chicago and worked briefly before enlisting in the Marine Corps on Oct. 29, 1959. He served, with honor, until July 26, 1963, earning the rank of corporal. Once a Marine, always a Marine - Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful).
In 1966 they moved to Owasso, where he was employed with American Airlines as an aircraft mechanic, and later as an aircraft inspector; and crew chief. He retired from American in 2004 with 38Ù years of service. He was third on American's seniority list at the time of his retirement.
Mr. Gooday was an avid golfer, deep sea/fresh water fisherman, hunter, certified scuba diver and pool player extraordinaire. He was traditional in both the Fort Sill Apache and Comanche ways. He often danced with the Gooday Family Spirit of the Mountain Gods Dancers. Talbert was also a chapter member of the CIVA, and he was the "cadence" caller for the CIVA Color Guard.
He and his wife were "Mom" and "Dad" to dozens of kids, who were known as the "Kool-aid" kids in Owasso as they opened up their home, fed, provided encouragement, transported and supported many of their daughter's friends and athletic teammates during her school years.
He is survived by: son, Damon Gooday of Owasso; daughter, Susan Gooday of Tulsa; sister, Inez Motah of Lawton; and many nieces and nephews. He was grandpa to many of his nieces and nephews children, and big brother to their children.
Talbert was preceded in death by: his parents; brothers: Henry Gooday; Bob Gooday Jr., Inman Cloyde Gooday, Lupe Gooday Sr., and Wendell Gooday; and sisters: Theodora Gooday and Flora "Gussie" Weryackewe.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the funeral home.
