Said to be a rancher, feudist and outlaw, he married Agnes Jane Arnold on 30 Nov 1870. They had 5 children. He enlisted in Co. O, Minute Men, under John Ross Alexander & served from Sept. 1872 through Jan. 1873.

In 1876 he shot and killed Deputy Sheriff, Samuel Butler Martin and severely wounded Deputy Sheriff, Wilson Rowntree, both of Burnet County. He then became known under the alias of "Joe Hill. After being involved in many other skirmishes & questionble "shootings"/"murders" from 1874 - 1882, e.g. "Mason County War", he was killed in 1884 when a horse fell on him.
