Cornelia Whipps Berry died in childbirth. In the words of her daughter, Ivey Berry Bischoff:

"When I was 1½ years old and Rachel was 2½ years old, our mother died of convulsions due to childbirth and the baby did not live. This took place the night that the large elevator at Norwood was burning, during a windy night. So everybody in town went to help keep the fire from spreading, including our dad and Uncle Charlie Berry. We were taken over to their house to stay with Helen, Mable and Florence Berry. It was then that this all happened to our mother. She was found on the floor in the entry way of the stairway, having convulsions and she never came out of it and died soon after Dad arrived."
