E. W. Austin first married Cornelia Thompson in Illinois and had 3 children. The 1850 census showed him in Sacramento (because of the gold rush), and his family in Illinois. Afterwards, he went back to Illinois and brought them to Olympia Washington in 1853 on the Oregon trail. In 1854 he was the Sargent at arms for the first territorial legislature. He also served during the Indian skirmishes. Cornelia died at 33 years old and then he married Desdamona Lafrances Dodge, daughter of Sarah Banks Ives and John Dodge who also travelled the Oregon Trail, but in 1854. He and Desdamona had 9 children. I believe 1 child is buried in the McLane Cemetery. The rest, with the exception of Elma are buried in Olympia near him or in the same cemetery. His 3 older children with Cornelia reached adulthood with children and some grandchildren, but no heirs after that. His children with Desdamona that reached adulthood were John, Walter, and Iva. Many descendants are still living in the Olympia and surrounding area. 3 of his sons, Arthur, John, and Walter built farm houses west of Olympia in 1899 to 1901 on 320 acres. Arthur lived until 1930 when his place was sold. John surveyed timber and in later years moved closer to town. Walter died after logging accident in 1905, but his son Roy maintained the farm until 1977. Daughter Iva married Mr Seeley first, then Tom Miles. They lived in Hoquiam with Desdamona living with her in her final years. Iva remarried in 1934 to Mr Haugen and died in 1939. She is buried in the family plot in Olympia.
