James Oscar “Wimpy” Penn, 69, of 20 John Spencer Road, Martinsville, died Thursday, Sept. 14, 2006, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville.

He was born in Patrick County on Feb. 3, 1937, to Ernest Dewey Penn and Rosa Lee Hylton Penn.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Dewey Preston Penn.

He retired from the Bassett Chair Co. with 43 years of service in the chair planking department. He attended the Church of God in Stuart.

Surviving are his wife, Carrie Hagwood Penn of the home; a daughter, Joan Penn Dillard of Martinsville; five sisters: Elaine Clark of Stuart, Marie Hairston of Bassett, Mary Niblett of Roanoke, Alberta Penn of Spencer and Jean Hagwood of Critz; four brothers: Henry Lee Penn of Stuart, Philmore Penn and Bobby Penn, both of Spencer and David Penn of Critz; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carver Assembly Building. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends at the wake from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the assembly building and other times at the home on John Spencer Road.

Collins Funeral Services in Bassett is in charge of arrangements.
