His mother Martha Hale died when he was 1yr old and he was raised by his grandmother Barbara Kern(Kelm) d. ca 1930, and aunt (dad's sister Minnie Wees Reeves)while in high school and jr college in Arkansas City, Kansas.
From 1934 to 1936 Gary was in Torrington, WY raising beef and dairy cattle. He was cheated out of his land inheritance from his grandfather. Gary had a half brother and a step brother; and at least 1 son (step-son Richard W Randall).
Gary enlisted US Army Field Artillery 2/6/36 as Pvt and to MSgt by 6/1/42; stationed at Ft Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX; Camp Ord, CA; Ft Lewis, WA; Camp Rucker, Ala.
Went to Field Artillery Officer Candidate School, Ft Sill, OK 6/1/42 to 9/1/42 commissioned to Warrant Officer; appointed 2nd Lt 2/25/43; promoted 1st Lt 10/4/43; Ft Benning and Camp Gordon, GA
3/31/44 Departed to North Africa and European Theater of
Operations: Allied Forces Hq, 46 Genl Hospital North Africa and Fifth Army Hq.
11/5/45 returned to US, Ft Brag, NC
