Thomas joined the Alexandria Riflemen in 1859. He was a commission merchant. In 1861 he entered the 17th Virginia Infantry as a sergeant. He was elected lieutenant in 1862. Captured at Manassas Gap in 1863, he was sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio, then to Point Lookout, Maryland. He was exchanged in October of 1864 and sent to a hospital in Richmond. He was paroled 13 April 1865 at Burkeville. Post-war he became flour inspector for Alexandria.
