Mary Helen Lee Cook- Putnam

Mary Helen Lee Cook- Putnam was born on September 30, 1927 to Ella Conklin Lee and Robert H. Lee in Waterloo, Arkansas.

Mary was a devoted Christian, dedicated Educator, loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, step-mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She quietly passed away at her home in Galveston, Texas on Sunday, March 18, 2018. She was the lovely age of 90 years young.

Funeral services are 10:00am Saturday, March 24, 2018 at Moody Methodist Church, Reverends Jerry Neff and Ray Pinard officiating. Burial will follow at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock under the direction of Carnes Brothers Funeral Home in Galveston. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00pm until 8:00pm.

Mary was born in Waterloo, Arkansas, but raised in Texarkana, Texas. Upon graduating from Texarkana Texas High School in 1945, she attended Texarkana Junior College. During this time, she met her first love, Carl W. Cook, a WWII, war hero pilot and teacher/coach. They married December 26, 1946. Their life adventure together took them across Texas where they made many friends. Carl and Mary had two devoted and loving children, Stephen W. Cook, and Cynthia Lee Cook-Marza. They moved to Odessa, Texas, where they raised their children until 1965 when the family moved to their present residence in Galveston, Texas. After her first husband, Carl Cook, passed in 1974, she later met a wonderful man, Owen Putnam. They dated and married in1991.

Mary graduated from Odessa College, Sui Ross University, and University of Houston. Her pursuit in education, led to a Bachelor of Science and Masters in Education. She began working for Galveston ISD in 1965 as a third-grade teacher at Alamo and Island Elementary (Parker Elementary). Her teaching career opportunities were continued as an Elementary school supervisor where she introduced the "Right to Read" program for GISD. Later she became the principal of Burnet Elementary, "Pirates", and the second principal of Parker Elementary, "Pelicans". During her leadership she helped establish the "Open Concept" of classroom teaching and continued advancing the "Right to Read" program statewide. As a frequent educational presenter, she continued to encourage educators to delve into the high standards of educational instruction. Never idle, Mary helped establish the Galveston ISO Educational Foundation. As the Vice President of Programs, she helped establish the purpose to the foundation and its programs.

Mary loved Moody Methodist Church. As a devoted member, she was actively involved in her Sunday school class, Agape, teaching Sunday School and the many churches committees. Of course, she had her favorites, which was the Christian Board of Education and the Libbie's Place Adult Daycare, where she was one of the founders.

Mary's community service continued as the past president of the Alpha Delta Kappa teachers' sorority, a founder of the Galveston Island Isle-a-Manders square dance organization, the West End Business Association, the Cultural Arts Association, and numerous professional and community organizations.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband's Carl W. Cook and Owen D. Putnam; her sister Doris L. Weaver and brother - in -law Walter Weaver, and her parents Ella C. Lee and Robert H. Lee. She is survived her children: son, Stephen W. Cook and partner Judy Mangus, her daughter Cynthia Cook- Marza, Lori Marsh, Leslie Johnston and husband Patrick Johnston, and Lisa Strapp. Mimi's grandchildren; Carl W. Cook and finance Jessie Ormand, Kimberlee Marza, Stephanie Marza­-Hebert and husband Scott Hebert, Margaret Marsh, William Marsh and wife Jessica Marsh, Melanie Johnston, Audrey Johnston, Erica Johnston, and Aaron Johnston. Her joys were her great-grandchildren Houstin Marza, Trey Marza, Joseph Marza, Angel Marza-Hebert and Jason Marza-Hebert. She is also survived by her brother, Robert "Swede" Lee and wife Jeanne Lee as well as numerous nephews, nieces and cousins; and beloved family and friends Lydia Cook and Eloise Karlan.

Pallbearers will be Steve Cook, Carl Cook, David Weaver, Scott Hebert, Patrick Johnston, and Swede Lee.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to the UTMB Breast Cancer center doctors and nurses, the Right at Home caregivers and the Texas Home Health Hospice caregivers for their never-ending patience and care.
