While still in high school he received his first job writing as a correspondent for The Hunting and Fishing News. Gary's zeal for writing was discovered as he took a job with The Livingston Enterprise where he worked for a short time before enrolling in the journalism program at the University of Montana. he worked for the Missoulian while at the university, and after graduation in 1969 moved to Spokane, where he signed on at the Spokesman Review. Gary then returned to the Missoulian where he was a government reporter and, in October 1972, was promoted to the Lee State Bureau in Helena, where he served as a reporter and later as Bureau Chief.
In 1977, Gary joined the Montana Stockgrowers Association as communications director. He subsequently was granted the opportunity to become Executive Director of the Montana Mining Association. His term as Executive Director was one of Gary's richest and proudest achievements. In serving he lobbied both on the state and federal level, traveled extensively, and was blessed enough to meet some of his closest friends. After leaving the Montana Mining Association, he worked for several associations writing newsletters and lobbying during legislative session. Most recently he was serving as editor of Continental Publications.
Among other things, Gary's hobbies included hunting, fishing, reading, and traveling. But, his most beloved avocation was most definitely boxing. As he would have liked to put it, "On Friday July 16 Gary Alfred Langley went down for the final count." He was a proud 4-3 as an amateur boxer, before retiring to the role of enthusiast. Enthusiasm quickly gave way, and before long Gary was much more than just a mere spectator. He served as secretary for the Association of Boxing Commissioners, inspected title fights for numerous ranking organizations, and served 12 years as a commissioner for the State Board of Athletics, finishing his term as chairman.
Gary held interest and pride in the community. He was a long-standing member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, and served as president of both Helena's Last Chance Press Club and the Montana Society of Association Executives. He also coached junior soccer in the Helena area. Gary married his college sweetheart Pamela Patrick on October 22, 1972. He separated from her in 1995 and later divorced.
He is survived by his son, Jeff, daughter, Kari and their mother Pam; nephew, niece and great niece.
His parents, Alfred and Victoria Langley and his sister, Vicki Ann Langley, preceded him in death.
