Nathan Atwood was born to Jesse J. and Sarah "Sallie" Sanders Atwood. As a young man, Nathan moved to Matewan, Mingo County, W. Va. He was one of the 21 defendants in the famous Matewan Massacre shootout in 1920, between the coal miners and Baldwin Felts detectives. Charges against Nathan were dropped, and the other defendants were found not guilty. He died just a few years later, supposedly in some kind of accident involving a train.
