Flight Sergeant George William CHILMAID . RAF. 362515.
Died on Active Service on the 10th of July 1941 at Abu Sueir, Egypt . Aged 35.

George was born in 1906 in Hextable in Kent, the son of George William Chilmaid and his wife Lilian Beatrice (nee Wood).
His father was a farm bailiff who came to Mytchett in the early 1920s.
The family had moved into Pine View in Salisbury Grove by 1924.

On the 23rd December 1932 George married Marie Hilda Louise Collins of Brancaster, Norfolk. at Westgate-on-Sea . Marie was 26.
They had at least two children; the eldest Judith was born in Aldershot in 1933.

The 102 Maintenance Unit he was attached to was based at RAF Abu Sueir, Egypt, from the beginning of January 1939. George was a Flight-Sergeant, serving with this RAF unit in Egypt when he died.

Research by Lee Thomas (Camberley Memorial site) –The War Diary for 102 Maintenance Unit, R.A.F. has the following entry for the 10th of July 1941;

"The station was attacked by hostile aircraft in the early hours of 10.7.41 considerable damage to aircraft and buildings was incurred. Casualties - 1 officer, 1 warrant officer and eight other ranks were killed and several others were slightly injured. Detailed reports have already been submitted to headquarters."

George's father had died in an accident while working at the sewerage farm in Doman Road, Camberley and was buried at St Peter’s on the 1st September, 1930 aged 58.
Family life after her husband’s death must have been difficult for Mrs Chilmaid, but by 1939 she had found employment working in a grocery store in the village. Even then her slender finances were upset when her purse was stolen when a soldier visiting the shop distracted her and stole it.
After the death of George in 1941 his older brother Frank moved back in with his mother.
Mrs Chilmaid continued living in Mytchett until her death in August 1973.

George is remembered here on his father’s grave and is commemorated also on the Lych Gate Memorial at St. Andrew's Church , Frimley Green, Surrey --- and on the Camberley War Memorial .

George is buried at Ismailia War Cemetery, Ismailia, Egypt. Grave Reference: 6. B. 5.
