Herman L. Griewisch, a 55-year member of the Silver Creek Fire Department, died unexpectedly at home Monday. He was 73.

The Silver Creek native attended schools here. From 1947 to 1950, he worked in maintenance repair at Rhinehart Hospital.

He served in the Army's 134th Ordnance Company at Fort Carson, Colo., from 1953 to 1955. Following active service, he spent some time in the Army Reserve.

Mr. Griewisch retired in 1991 after 30 years working in maintenance with the state Thruway Authority.

In May 1949, he joined the Silver Creek Fire Department. He was chief from 1962 through 1964 and was a past president of the department's Hook and Ladder Company and the Silver Creek Firemen's Association.

A life member of the Southwestern Firemen's and the Western Firemen's associations, he also was a member of the Silver Creek Fire Department's Fire Wardens and captain of the Fire Police. On April 30, 1998, he was honored with a Heroic Action Award by President Bill Clinton for his service to the department and the community.

Mr. Griewisch was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Silver Lodge 757, Free & Accepted Masons, which he joined in 1965.

He was known as a handyman who could fix anything, and he enjoyed tinkering with clocks.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, the former Joan A. Samuelson; a daughter, Patricia E. Smith of Phoenix; three sons, Jeffrey L. and Herman L. Jr., both of Silver Creek, and Ronald A. of Elgin, Ill.; a brother, Raymond F., and a sister, Arda Metzger, both of Silver Creek; and three grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hole-Parker Funeral Chapel, 160 Central Ave. Burial will be in Hanover Center Cemetery.
