United States Army General. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1915 and was commissioned into the Infantry arm, and served during World War I with the 4th Division in France. After the war, he served in the Philippines, various intelligence Divisions of the General Staff and was promoted Brigadier General in 1941. In World War II, he was promoted Major General in command of the 92nd Infantry Division, leading his soldiers from 1942 and the entire combat Italy campaign, 1944 to 1945. In 1946, he became Deputy Chief of Staff of the East under General Douglas MacArthur. General MacArthur placed Almond in charge of the X Corps, the main landing force in the invasions of Inchon and Wonsan, Korea in 1950. In command of the amphibious invasion, he captured the South Korean capital, Seoul and led the fighting withdrawal southwards from Choisin Reservoir. Promoted to Lieutenant General in 1951, he became head of the Army War College and retired in 1953. His decorations include the Distinguished Service Cross with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Silver Star with oak leaf cluster and the Purple Heart.
