Mr. Johnnie Murrell Lewis, 81, of Rocky Mount, died Wednesday, March 14th.

Mr. Lewis, born in Henderson, NC; was the son of the late Heber and Blanch Lewis.

He graduated from Henderson High School and worked his way through college, earning degrees from Louisburg College, High Point College, and duke University, where he graduated with a Master Degree in Counseling. He married Norma Kay Stem in April 1962. He served as a Methodist pastor for 9 and a half years, owned his own construction company, and in his later years , served as a counselor to pastors and church leaders. His life was characterized by a complete surrender to the person and purpose of Jesus Christ, a love of and deep loyalty to family and friends, integrity and fidelity, a generous heart that was always ready to serve others, and a great love of Duke basketball.

He is survived by his wife Norma Kay Stem Lewis, of the home; two sons, Peter John Lewis and wife Robin of Rocky Mount; and Jesse Manning Lewis and wife Beth of Rocky Mount; a sister, Frances Long of Henderson; 7 grandchildren, Whitney, Katie, Jake, Anna, Carrie, Ben, and Andrew; two great grandchildren, Emma Kate and Josiah; and extended family.
