Mr. Walter Mervin Short, age 89, of Cedar Bluff, VA passed away Tuesday, March 13, 2018 in Bristol, TN. He was born September 13, 1928 at Shorts Gap, VA and was the son of the late Thomas “Tom” and Bertha Palmer Short. Walter was a US Army Veteran serving in Japan after WW II. Walter and Jeanette formerly owned and operated the Richlands Army and Navy Store for many years. He was a long time member and past president of the Richlands Kiwanis Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years, Jeanette Hassie Short; one son, Larry Walter Short; three brothers, Ballad Shortt, Ramey “Rabbit” Short, and Harold B. Shortt; four sisters, Ethel White, Maudie Bronson, Effie Short, and an infant sister, Trula Shortt.
Walter is survived by his son, Mervin Shortt and wife Nancy; daughter, Linda Fay Grasso and husband Tony; grandchildren, Tony Shortt and partner Kevin, Tami Ham, and Larry Short; great-granddaughter, Keylee Short; brothers, Otis Shortt and wife Vella, Tommy Shortt and Linda Price, Jason Short and wife Joyce; sister, Dot Keene and husband Jack, and Garnie Jean Thomas; sisters-in-law, Earlean Shortt, Norene Short, and Charlene Shortt.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 pm Friday, March 16 at the Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands, VA. Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 am Saturday, March 17 at the Richlands Tabernacle with Rev. Monroe Greeley and Rev. Phillip Horton officiating. Entombment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum at Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be Mitch Street, Shawn Deel, Jeff Hylton, Johnny Hylton, Keith Whited, and Rodney Short. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Richlands Tabernacle Church, 2506 4th Street, Richlands, VA 24641.
