James Calhoun Mickens was born alongside his fraternal twin, John on September 27, 1934 to Robert and Susie Cooper Mickens in Bishopville, South Carolina. He passed away peacefully at the Abingdon Care and Rehabilitation Center in Green Brook, NJ. He leaves behind his loving daughter, Christine; sisters: Earline, Ella Mae, Annie Mae, Mary, and Susie; brothers: Wardell and Robert; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, DeLois (Futrell), parents, sisters: Lily and Wilhelmina; and brothers: John and Jessie. 

James was a Chef for Elizabeth General Hospital until his retirement in 2001. He began cooking at a young age and actually cooked for a neighbor family in Bishopville. He liked to bake cakes and muffins, specifically corn and continued to do so until his vision became impaired.
