Tom Huff passed away at home on Friday, February 16, 2018.
Tom was born on June 20, 1922, in Moore, Montana to parents Bertha and George Huff. He grew up in Moore with his two sisters, Geneva and June, and his brother George, who all preceded him in death.
Tom was a World War II Army veteran serving as a combat infantryman in the 27th Division. He served on three Japanese islands ending on Okinawa where he aided in the capture of pivotal Japanese territory before contracting a mosquito-borne illness. He missed getting his war medals because he was in various hospitals the last seven months of the war. On August 17, 2016, Senator Jon Tester awarded Tom eight World War II medals and a Congressional Citation which was put in the Congressional history record for all time. Tom said it only took 70 years to get his medals as he had tried before.
After being honorably discharged from the Army in 1945, Tom settled in Lewistown, Montana where he joined the police force. He spent the last seven years of his 23-year career as Chief of Police. He went on to be a jeweler in Lewistown for the next 14 years before he retired from the work force.
His hobbies were wood crafting and building flying model airplanes. He belonged to many civic organizations including the Elks Clubs in Lewistown and Billings where he was president of the dance club for 40 years. He was an excellent dancer and danced up until he was 92.
Tom is survived by his wife Georgia and four stepchildren, Al Love, Jeanene McKnight (Gary), Louise Elling, and Jeannette Switzer (Mike).
Cremation has taken place. Tom’s graveside service will be held at Yellowstone National Veteran Cemetery in Laurel later this spring with a reception following at First Christian Church, 522 N 29th St, Billings, MT.
