He was employed by the Metro Transit Authority until 1981 then went on to drive Charter Buses for several years after. He had a passion for singing and founded Gospel music group The Royal Kings then went on to sing with The Masonic Brothers, Spiritual Lights and The Trumpet Kings.
Matthew was the Senior Deacon at Living Word Worship Center where he served faithfully until he was no longer able. He was a member of the Masons in Washington, D.C.
In addition to his parents he was proceeded in death by his step-mother Mary Hubbard; one sister, and one son Quentin Hubbard.
He has left to cherish his memory his wife of 43 years Jane Hubbard of Waynesboro; five sons, Matthew L. Hubbard Jr. (Deena) of Atlanta, Ga., Shawn T. Hubbard (Julia) of Waynesboro, Martin Strange (DeAnna) of NC, Matthew Hubbard II and Tony Hubbard, both of South Boston; seven daughters, Rev. Dr. Priscilla and Patricia Hubbard of Atlanta, Ga., Kelli Johnson (Wilbert) of Waynesboro, Monique Price (Lance) of Toledo, Oh., Laverne and Lorene Hubbard both of South Boston, and Sue Cabell of Charlottesville; four brothers, Robert Hubbard(Lynn) of Burlington, NC, Lawrence “Joe” Hubbard (Emma Lee) of Halifax, Roy Hubbard of North Carolina, and George Hubbard (Clarice) of Halifax; one sister Martha Simmons (Otis) of South Hill; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Miller (Jimmy) and Roberta Johnson all of Waynesboro; one brother-in-law Don Johnson (Duckie) of Stuarts Draft; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a very special cousin Veronica Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and special friends Mae Harding and Family and Marie Taylor.
A funeral Service will be held at St. James Baptist Church, 1094 Albemarle Ave., Friday March 16, 2018 at 12:00 Noon. The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. Interment will be at Augusta Memorial Park.
