Dr. Nathan Clay Martin II, 72, died peacefully, May 6, 2017, surrounded by his family, at his home in Lexington MA.

Nathan was born in Terre Haute, Indiana in 1945, the son of Nathan C. Martin and Deloris Wegrich Martin. He graduated from Anderson High School in 1963 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from General Motors Institute in 1969. In the same year, he was awarded a Masters of Science Degree from MIT followed by a Doctorate Degree from MIT in 1976.

He was employed by BBN Technologies as Principal Scientist in the Department of Applied Physics and Tactical Sonar until 2009. At that time, he joined Raytheon as an Engineering Fellow in the Department of Advanced Technical Acoustics and Dynamics.

He was an active member of many churches in his life, most recently Hancock United Church of Christ where he was a member of the Chancel Choir, Carillon Handbell Choir, and served on numerous committees.

Nathan was an avid mineral collector and President of the Boston Mineral Club. He collected specimens from many localities in New England as well as sites across the country and in Canada. He was very proud of his extensive mineral collection and loved to share his knowledge with others.

Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He loved to grill, make salsa, and eat spicy foods. He would host guests by the pool, playing a game of bocce or croquet. In the summer, there was nothing he enjoyed more than time spent on Hamilton Shores at his home in Brooklin, ME.

Nathan will be lovingly remembered by his wife Barbara, his son Mark and wife Kelly, his son Matthew and wife Patricia, his son Michael and wife Ketti, his stepson Daniel and wife Sarah, his stepdaughter Megan and husband Michael, and his stepson Timothy. He will forever be fondly remembered as Grandpa and PopPop to his grandchildren, Ashley, Craig, Griffin, Ella, Jonah, Kai, Cameron, Kullen, Elise, Konner, Annabel, and Emery. He is predeceased by his first wife, Carol Dian Martin, and their daughter, Mona Marie Martin.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at Hancock United Church of Christ in Lexington at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday May 21, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you contribute to a scholarship fund in his honor which helps students further their studies in earth and environmental sciences. Donations should be made out to the Boston Mineral Club and sent to the Nathan Martin Scholarship Fund P.O. Box 468 Halifax MA 02338 .

Nathan will always be remembered as a caring, kind, compassionate, loving, and brilliant man to all who had the honor of meeting him. He will live forever in our hearts. Arrangements handled by Anderson-Bryant Funeral Home, Stoneham, Massachusetts.
