Virgil L. Purkey was born to Mary Mike and Bessie Mae Simerly Purkey on June 11, 1915. In the 1930 Census for Blount County, Tn, the family included his parents who were 48 and 43, Owen 20, Clyde 18, Lucile 18, Virgil 13, Marvalan L 12, Fred N 10, Ralph T 8, Cecil 7, Anna M 5 and Kenneth 3.
In 1942, Virgil wed Mattie Goins. They were parents of Harold E Purkey, Joyce Purkey and Karen Brendle. Virgil died February 23, 1967 and is buried beside Mattie in Shady Grove Cemetery in Blount County, Tennessee.
