Stanley D. Mitchell, 89, of Davenport, Iowa went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.

He was born in January 31, 1929 to Abraham and Anna (Hart) Mitchell. He was united in marriage to Minnie Lewis on March 14, 1981 in Davenport.

He was self-employed in Engineering, Architect & Design, and Refrigeration for many years before retiring.

Stanley was a Veteran, serving in the Military Armed Forces, where he was a Corporal and Squad Leader in the Korean War, from 1950-1953. He attended Scott Community College, where he earned an Associate’s Degree in Engineering, focusing on Architect and Design, consistently achieving Dean’s List, as well as earning a certificate in Refrigeration and HVAC.

Stanley was a kind, patient, and loving husband to his wife, Minnie Mitchell, for 38 years. He doted on her, he took care of her, and he would often say she was the “apple of his eye”, “the love of his life”.

He was a devoted father, and grandfather to his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He was selfless, and would always come home when he was needed. You could find him many days sitting at the dining room table counseling, and offering bits of wisdom to his children and grandchildren. He was always available to help.

Stanley enjoyed spending time with his wife, and family. He loved to read and smoke his pipe and drink coffee. He loved to remodel homes, always fixing and repairing, making things nicer and better. Some of his favorite things to do were to watch Leg Horn cartoons, and old Martin reruns. He once called the television station to voice his displeasure of Leg Horn being taken off the air. He loved making countless trips to Menards for supplies and equipment, sometimes 2-3 times in one day. Menards was practically his second home. He sang old Dylan songs and played and owned several Spanish guitars. His most favorite pastime was the time he spent working on his 1970 Buick Skylarks. He painted on bright yellow, calling it “Old Yeller”, and the other one bright blue, calling it “The blue Goose”. Stanley spent countless hours and days under the hood, tinkering around with his beloved Skylarks. Endearingly he was known in the community as “Mr. Stan, the man with the white hair that drives the Skylarks”. Stanley enjoyed studying his bible and doing weekly bible lessons. You could always count on him for a joke or two. He never lost that twinkle in his eye, and mischievous smile on his face. He believed in working hard and doing it “right”. Always going the extra, always giving a lil bit more. He believed in treating others the way you would want to be treated, and you could frequently find Stanley studying his bible and doing his bible lessons.

Stanley leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Stanley Mitchell Jr. (Bernita), two daughters: Brenda McClure, of Chicago, IL; and Lisa Kopite (Lawrence), of Texas; five stepsons: Eddie Spears, Sr. of Hammond, Lousiana; Curtis Spears (Brenda) of Davenport, IA; Mark Spears (Carla) of Davenport, IA; Clay Spears of Cherokee, IA; Stanley Spears of Davenport, IA. Three stepdaughters: Shirley Tillery (Cleo), Hammond, LA; Miahsha Felder (Abe), of Independence, LA; Peggy Ross (Fred) of Davenport, IA, a whole host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents; Abraham and Anna Mitchell, and a sister; Dorothy Childress.
