Enlisted on 4/20/1861 at Harper's Ferry, VA., he was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant into Captain George W. Chambers' Company, 1st Virginia Infantry. (This company subsequently became Company K, 2nd Virginia Infantry.)
Appointed Capt 4/20/1862.
Signed Nov & Dec 1863 Roll as Commanding Regiment.
Promoted to Major, Field & Staff on 4/21/1864.
Paroled 4/19/1865 Mount Jackson, VA.

The 2nd Infantry Regiment was assembled at Charles Town in April, 1861, then moved to Harper's Ferry to seize the armory. The unit was accepted into Confederate service in July. Its companies were from the counties of Clarke, Frederick, Floyd, Jefferson, and Berkeley. It became part of the Stonewall Brigade.
