17th Virginia Infantry - CSA

The son William and Maria Herbert was born at the historic Carlyle House in Alexandria. He was raised in Loudoun County, becoming a banker in Alexandria. He married Alice Gregory. In 1858 he was made Captain of the Alexandria Riflemen, a militia company. In January of 1861 he was appointed First Lieutenant of the Old Dominion Rifles. On 17 April 1861 they became part of the 17th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. Arthur was Captain of Company H. He was elected Major on 27 April 1862. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on 1 November 1862. He was detached to the 29th Regiment of Virginia Infantry in 1863. On 8 July 1864 he was appointed Colonel of the 17th. When he was paroled at Appomattox on 9 April 1865, he was commanding Corse's Brigade. Postwar he returned to his occupation of banking. A member of the Robert E. Lee Camp No. 2, Confederate Veterans in Alexandria. He was active in affairs of Episcopal Theological Seminary, Alexandria, and the Episcopal High School. Presumably the date of death on the marker is the date of internment. His Certificate of Death has the correct date.
