MILLS born Montgomery County, Tennessee Aug. 4, 1825; died Humphreys County Tennessee Mar. 16, 1876; medical graduate, University of Nashville, 1857; served in 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army; captured but released; moved to Big Bottom in Humphreys County in 1868; died unmarried.

William enlisted as a private on Aug. 12, 1861, in Company A, 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment, Confederate States Army. He was 36 years old. On Sept. 23, 1861 he was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the 50th Tennessee Infantry Regiment. He was captured on Feb. 16, 1862 (along with the rest of his unit) at Fort Donelson, Stewart Co., TN. On April 26, 1862, he was transferred from the POW camp at Camp Chase, Ohio to Johnson's Island, Ohio. On June 22, 1862 he was on the roll of POW's ordered released near Sandusky, Ohio, by the U.S. War Department. On May 13, 1865 he surrendered at Montgomery, AL. On May 15, 1865 he swore an Oath of Allegiance to the United States.
