41st Ohio Governor. A native of Columbus, Ohio, he left his schooling in 1864 to enlist in the Union Army, and was mustered in as a Private in Company K, 150th Ohio Volunteer Infantry in May 1864. He served a hundred-day term of service, and was honorably mustered out in August 1864. He was admitted to the Ohio State Bar Association after the war, and set up a law practice in Franklin County, Ohio. He went on to serve as the Ohio State Attorney General from 1880 to 1883, as a Justice of the Ohio State Supreme Court from 1883 to 1885, and as a Delegate to the Republican National Convention from Ohio in 1900. In 1899 he was elected the 41st Governor of Ohio, and served from 1900 until 1904. He passed away in Columbus, Ohio in October 1904, only ten months after leaving office.
