Stanley Allen Wells, 77, of Romney passed away Friday, February 2nd at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born January 19, 1941 in Augusta, he was the son of the late Perry A. and Nona (Richman) Wells. Besides his parents, Stanley is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara M. Wells. Three brothers; Ansel, Johnny, and Rodney (infant) and by his sister; Kay Wells Nealis.
Stanley is survived by his three daughters; Jeanne Milleson and husband Roy of Springfield, Barbara Spaid and husband Wendell of Romney, and Cecelia Kesner and husband Matt of Romney. His brother; Larry Wells of Lovingston, VA. Five grandchildren; Samantha Spaid and fiancé Steven Haines, Bryan Spaid and wife Rachel, and Molly, Maryanna, and Meredith Milleson. Also surviving are three great grandchildren; Kenadee Haines, Macie Spaid, and Caiden Ritchie.
Stanley was born and raised in Augusta, WV and graduated from Romney High School. To find employment, he traveled to New England where he not only found gainful employment, he found the love of his life, Barbara. They married in 1963 and soon started their family. They stayed in New England until the hills of West Virginia called Stanley and family home in 1969. He accepted a job offer with Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. in Cumberland as a truck driver, where he would spend 22 years on the road, amassing way over a million miles. To do this, he and his brother Johnny partnered; One drove, while the other slept. They did this until Kelly-Springfield closed in 1991. Stanley was not ready to retire, so he started at the Hampshire Center in Romney as the first Maintenance Supervisor. Stanley would fill the void of need in about any capacity. Many will remember that in bad weather he drove all over the county picking up and delivering back home many employees.
Where his family was concerned, Stanley focused on and took great pride in being an excellent provider, and would do whatever it took to do the best for his family. He told Barbara more than once, “you don’t have to work.” He also gave Barbara full credit for raising the girls and would be the first to concede he had little to do with their upbringing. However he seldom, if ever, missed a function at the girls school. Stanley and Barbara were founding members of the Romney Rescue Squad, and the squad played a big roll in their social lives. Stanley never met a stranger and he had way more than his fare share of orneriness. Never the less, he loved people, Christmas and would always have time for a friendly wave or conversation.
Friends will be received Sunday, February 4, 2018 from 1:00 PM till 5:00 PM at Shaffer Funeral Home in Romney. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 5, 2018 at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.
