Steven Joseph "Steve" Barnes was born 20 November 1955 in Yankton County, South Dakota to Allen Joseph Hochhalter Sr. and Darlene Howard. He was the first of two sons born to this couple.

In May of 1961, Steve was adopted by his mother's second husband Roger Wells Barnes. Roger lovingly raised both Steve and his little brother Allen as his own sons from the time he married their mother Darlene in June of 1958 until his passing in July of 2001.

At the age of 18, Steven made the decision to enlist in the US Army. He proudly served our country for many years while enlisted and was a very active member of his local VFW--where he was affectionately known as "The Poppy Man"--at the time of his passing. He also loved cars and was a (darn good) mechanic for the vast majority of his adult life.

In October of 1989, Steve married Teresea Wheeldon in Coryell County, Texas. To their union, three children were born--two daughters and a son. The couple divorced in March of 1999 in Oregon and neither of them remarried.

Steve passed away on 13 February 2018 in Yuma, (Yuma Co.) Arizona while visiting his youngest daughter after the birth of her youngest daughter. He was cremated and his remains were entrusted to his eldest daughter for safe-keeping until the time of his burial. A celebration of his life was held at the Dallas Alliance Church in Dallas, (Polk Co.) OR on 19 August 2018.

A more formal funeral service was held for Steve on 17 August 2019 and his cremains were interred in the Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield, (Knox Co.) Nebraska next to his maternal grandmother, Frieda Orilla (Beach) Doering.

Steve was preceded in death by both of his fathers--Allen in 1978 and Roger in 2001--as well as, his youngest brother Randy Barnes in 2015.
