He married his cousin Evie Isbell, whose brother married Marshall's sister.
He and Evie later divorced due to his abusive nature. She was 21 years old and remarried 60 days before the divorce was final due to a technicality, whereupon he filed a charge of bigamy. Hours after bringing the charge, he was found murdered, a bullet in his head and throat cut ear to ear. Four relatives were arrested on suspicion but released without formally being charged.

He died on the Henry Ellen Road near Scott City, half-way between Leeds and Pell City, often considered a suburb of Leeds, Moody, or Trussville.

Birmingham, Ala. June 6 - WARRANTS were issued today for the arrest of four men, all but one relative of the deceased, for the assassination of Marshall Isbell at Henry Ellen, in the northeastern part of the county Tuesday nigh. Arrests will be made at once. The body of Isbell was buried this afternoon near Trussville, in the northern part of the county. Isbell was shot twice in the forehead and then his throat cut from ear to ear. The dead man was separated from his wife and recently had started proceedings charging bigamy against her."
