He gave Toledo, Ohio it's name and was associated with the Toledo Blade for many years. In 1853 he removed to Lockport, Niagara Co., NY.

Married first, Jan. 1838, Caroline Walbridge who died Nov. 24, 1849. 4 daughters.

Married second on Dec. 31, 1855 at Milwaukee, WI, Isadore Emma Hopkins, daughter of Otis Ransom Hopkins of Clarence, Erie Co., NY. She died 1899.
