Son of Gilbert and Anna (Dolben) Affleck. Rear Admiral Sir Edmund Affleck was a naval officer of considerable repute. Created 1st Affleck Baronet of Dalham Hall in 1782 for his service. Married twice but had no male heir. The title therefore went to his nephew, Sir Gilbert Affleck, 2nd Baronet.
