David was born in Oxford Township, Guernsey County, OH and came with his parents to Cambridge, OH in 1860. Practically a farmer, something of a coal miner, and a fairly expert typographer, he taught a term of school and served as a soldier in the 85th Ohio Regiment of the Union army for four months. He was first an apprentice, then local editor, then partner for 16 years, and then sole proprietor and editor-in-chief of the Guernsey Times. In 1871 he married Martha Craig and they had seven children. Three died in childhood - David Danner, Martha Craig, and Margaret McFadden; the others are Rowland Corwin, Maxwood Petty, John Sherman, and Martha Craig.
