Leo Sylvester Thomas passed away on July 9, 2015, at the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center, in La Plata, MD. He was born on January 23, 1918, the son of Oliver and Irene (Carroll) Thomas.

Leo was educated in the Charles County Public School System, entered military service in 1942, and served for 5 years in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in Saipan, Mariana Islands, a commonwealth of the United States, and was honorably discharged in 1947.

He joined the Mount Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He was church trustee, served as deacon, and was the church’s faithful and dedicated treasurer for over 30 years. Leo worked at the Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head, MD, for 32 years. After retiring from there, he was employed with the Charles County School District for 7 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Olene (Jackson) Thomas; one brother, Clyde Thomas; and one sister, Aline Price; one aunt, Bernetta Smith; and one cousin, Rudolph “Hick” Datcher.

He is survived by one son, James Thomas; one daughter-in-law, Beatrice Thomas; one adopted daughter, Edna (Anthony) Proctor; two adopted sons, James (Ardell) Jackson and Lloyd (Penny) Jackson; five granddaughters, Christina Thomas, Courtney Proctor, Penae’ Jackson, Shemika and Tylese Carroll; six grandsons, Mark Parson, Anthony Proctor, Jr., Lloyd Jackson, Jr., Glen Carroll, Paul Harley, and Jerry Harley; one uncle, Morris Carroll; one brother-in-law, Henry “Van Dyke” Lewis; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Viewing and service held at Mt. Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Nanjemoy, MD. Interment in church cemetery.
