Philleo Nash, Wisconsin Rapids cranberry grower, Democratic Party leader, and lieutenant governor, 1959-1961. From 1946 to 1952 he was a special assistant to President Truman on minority issues and as such was a target of attack by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy.

He served in the administrations of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman. During the Truman administration, he advised the President to integrate the United States Armed Forces. From 1961-1966, he was commissioner of the United States Bureau of Indian Affairs during the administrations of John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson.
