Greg was born in Onawa, Iowa on February 11, 1952 to Paul and Alvena (Rolph) Phillips. Greg graduated from Hoover High School in Des Moines in 1970, attended University of Northern Iowa and entered the Air Force. He served in Germany and Thailand and was honorably discharged in February 1975. He returned home to Des Moines and started his career working in hardware, eventually owning his own store, Phillips Hardware, in Beaverdale. For the last 10 years he continued helping customers at Home Depot in Urbandale.
On August 31, 1985, Greg married his true love, Cheryl King. They resided in Grimes, Iowa for over 30 years. In July of 1987 they lovingly welcomed their son, Paul Phillips, to their family. Paul was joined soon by his beloved Sheltie "pet" sisters. Greg's passion in life was his family - especially his 3 month old granddaughter Allison Phillips. Greg first and foremost was a compassionate care-giver. He was a simple, good man, whose focus in life was his family, working on his home, garden, and yard. He was quick to step in and help anyone with questions on plants, plumbing, electrical...you name it, he knew something about it. He loved hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting...do you get it...anything to do with outdoors.
Those left to cherish Greg's memory include his son, Paul; daughter-in-law Lisa; cherished granddaughter, Allison; beloved Sheltie, Allie; sisters, Barb Magee and Cory (Richard) Klein; brother, Brad (Jean) Phillips; mother and father-in-law Willa and Paul King; brother-in-laws Lou King (girlfriend, Pat Camp); Larry (Karen) King; lifelong best friends, Jeff and Rhonda Cash; many Home Depot employees; and many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Greg was preceded in death by his soul mate, Cheryl, and his father and mother, Paul and Alvena Phillips, and Craig Magee his brother-in-law.
